You Do Not Have to Clean Yourself Before Entering the River

So many of us carry a quiet belief that we must tidy ourselves up before we are allowed to rest in the sacred. We wait until we feel calmer, more healed, more ready, more worthy. And so we wait a very long time.

In one of the opening Communions of The Primordial Breath, the Breath answers that belief with a tender invitation:

You may be carrying much as you arrive here.

Questions.

Exhaustion.

Disappointment.

Grief.

Fear.

Old agreements.

Or perhaps a longing that you cannot fully name.

Bring it all.

You do not need to clean yourself before entering the river.

You do not need to become worthy of communion.

You are already welcome.

From The Primordial Breath: A Holy Communion

What we carry is welcome too

The river does not ask the rain to arrive clean. It does not refuse the fallen leaves. It receives what comes and keeps flowing. The invitation here is the same: to come exactly as you are, with the heaviness and the hope, and to let presence meet you there.

A gentle practice for today

Before you do anything else, pause. Notice what you are carrying right now. Name it softly, without judgment: tired, hopeful, unsure, grieving. Then take one slow breath and let the words of the Communion be enough:

The Living Waters do not ask for perfection.

They ask for presence.

From The Primordial Breath

You are already welcome, Beloved.
